Brooklyn producer Great Ghost aka Sean Kravit has been exploring the quieter sides of electronic music through elegant, cinematic compositions that touch on ambient and downtempo, while veering off into melodic techno at times. With an earnest, almost diaristic approach to music, Kravit returns to share five new tracks of heartfelt wonder on the new EP Fall Vs. “I tend to work on and think about music in association with the seasons”, he says.

Fall Vs comes from a deeply personal place and represents both a sonic shift from Kravit’s previous work and a kaleidoscopic synthesis of his various influences. Created during a time filled with great uncertainty, turmoil, but also joy, amid welcome milestones (getting married), the EP is one of his most emotive to date.  For the first time in years, Kravit was wrestling with a creative block that put his steady output on hold. “Then all these demos came out in a burst in Oct 2020”, he says. “I jammed and recorded the demos live on a minimal hardware setup out of necessity”. An intimate Halloween celebration coupled with the spectacle of the 2020 election “solidified that month as a special snapshot in time for me”. Sitting on the initial recordings for months, it was friend and collaborator Jon Lloyd that helped Kravit complete the project “at the dawn of spring”.

This spontaneous energy and emotional affect courses through the music, alternating between playful dubby-house synth jams (“Fall Vs”), pulsating jazzy IDM experiments (“Believer”) and dark, slower introspective pieces (“In the Cupola”). With a tempo restriction under 120 BPM as his sole guideline, Kravit takes cues from hip hop, deep grooves and IDM crafting intricate, moody downtempo melodies filled with poise and longing. There’s definitely a sense of nostalgia that comes across Fall Vs. The result brings to mind ‘90s chillout rooms, late nights on the road and early mornings at the rave, coupled with the sheer beauty of communing with others.
